A Walk Down the Whimsy Road

Wednesday, September 15, 2010
I'm scared to say that things have died down on the earthqake shakes in case they liven up again, but I'm taking a little diversion this morning from all things shaky to show you the merging talent of my 8 year old, Meredith.

The children have been taking private art lessons for a few years now with the fabulous June Pearson, a Christchurch artist, and illustrator of my book. Each child has their own style and it always amazes me how their art style reflects their personality. Hugh is architectural in his style - precise, detailed and almost photographic. Meredith on the other hand, has a more fanicful, whimsical style. I love her imagination - her colour, her free spirit.

I love the detail she gives her people. Look at the roses in those cheeks!

I can totally see her as an illustrator or fashion designer when she's older, although at the moment all she wants to do is run in the jungle with the wild animals.

On a rainy day recently she got it into her head to make these little beauties. It's a really fun idea for children to do - just draw people and dress them in real fabrics - we had run out of glue, so we improvised with staples, but this is all her own work. She also made one for her grandparents.

I really like the bow in my hair and my heels.

Here's one more picture I found tucked away in the art folder that I hadn't seen until today.

And here is the artist herself. My beautiful daughter. She's growing into a lovely girl. Kind, thoughtful, creative, pretty and unique.

Oh wow, so much talent! Your daughter's artwork is so very beautiful and inspiring. And your book... I clicked on the link and instantly thought, 'I've read that book!'. Congratulations! It is a wonderful story and I greatly enjoyed reading it with my children. The illustrations are, indeed, very, very beautiful.

What a fabulously talented family. Your blog posts are lovely. All the best and hope those nasty after shocks have simmered down x

P.S. Thanks for the idea of the fabric people - think my girls will enjoy that.

BEAUTIFUL! Looking at this, I hope to find a local artist so Amelia can take classes when she gets older. I'd LOVE her to have that opportunity.
