A Spoonful of Sugar....

....helps the medicine go down!

I have some things going on in my life right now that are absorbing a lot of my mental and emotional energy and I needed a break from it yesterday. So I made jam.

Making jam is not the sort of occupation you can do while distracted, so I had to really focus on what I was doing and put all other distractions aside.

One of the great things about living in the Bay of Plenty is our extended family. We are really enjoying being closer to Rob's older brothers and some of his cousins. The blessing is that one of his brothers has been here for years and years and has a really well-established garden with a bountiful Feijoa hedge.
We are just crazy about feijoas! We helped ourselves to some of the windfall last weekend, and yesterday my house was full of that wonderful, delicious aroma of cooking feijoas.

I made jam and syrup (cordial) for drinking. The syrup isn't quite perfect - probably a little too much texture in it from the feijoas, but I couldn't figure out how to stop that from happening, unless I hang it overnight. Anyone know?

But it tastes beautiful, and I don't think it will last long. It's very nice with Sprite or Soda Water. My daughter dug into the jam as soon as she got home from school. I will put the recipe up on my cooking blog soon.

I love Feijoa season!

I have never heard of those! Must try to figure out what they are like.

Aha! I thought they looked like guavas! I guess their alternate name is "pineapple guava". Maybe they taste similar or have a similar texture to regular guavas.

Heather - I just googled pineapple guava and you are right! Have you ever tried them?

Jam making does mean you have to be present in the moment.

Feijoa Syrup sounds great! I should try making that. I've made chutney, Feijoa sorbet and Feijoa Chicken Curry (which I found on this website: http://feijoafeijoa.wordpress.com/recipes/)
But I'm sure we didn't get as much fruit from our tree this year. I wonder if it was because of the weather.

Hi my sweet friend!

I have been in and out for a while and wanted to check in on you. I've been basking in motherhood and we've been going through a process to buy a home. We "think" it was approved but will know more in the next few days.

Can you tell me how you made the beautiful little jar bonnet? Did you embroider the top or use a marker? Did you sew the elastic around the bottom or just put a rubber band around it? Just lovely and I have NEVER had pineapple guava. It sounds just lovely!

I started a new blog which I hope to keep writing in. I think it will be my main blog now. I'll leave the URL as I post.

Glad to see you back and will be checking in here to see how your move went and look for updates on you since you've moved!

Love
