Down In The Garden Quilt Absolutely Finished

Saturday, April 2, 2011
Two nights ago I sewed the last stitch on my year-long project of doing this quilt. It arrived back last week from Roz Johnson who so skillfully did the machine quilting for me, and was encouraging enough to suggest I could do the next one myself if I bought the right batting! - Take note quilters - machine quilting doesn't work well with the cheap batting!

So here it is - finished with the red polka dot binding, which is actually one of my favourite things about the entrie quilt.

And the other favourite thing about this quilt is the hand-stitched label on the back. At the workshop I went to with Leanne Beasley, she emphasized over and over the importance of labelling your quilts. And suggested the added personalised touch of embroidering your own signature into the label. I loved this idea so much. Imagine my great, great grandchildren looking at it and running their fingers over it, and thinking of me as I stitched the quilt. For this is destined to become an heirloom. I made it with that in mind, but also that I would enjoy it too - it is very pleasing on the eye, and the colours are cheerful. It was a lot of work, but happy work.

This is so pretty! How good it must have felt to make that last stitch - I'll bet you couldn't quite believe it (that's how I'd be, anyway!) How fun to think about the future owners of your quilt, so special. Nicely done!

Your quilt is stunning! You must be so proud. I have a quilt that was made by my great-grandmother, and I love looking at it and imagining her hours of work in it. My mum recognises a lot of the fabric in it as it is made from old clothes and the like, which makes it even more special. Love your blog, Jackie

Beautiful Rach I also did a Leanne Beasley one years ago with lots of floral stitcheries. Isn't quilting addictive. I am doing the new Homespun block of the month called about town. It is quite cute shouldn't be putting yet another project on my list but couldn;t resist. Check out the first block on anni Downs site at hatched and patched. It is around 16 ' sq so quite a nice size to make either cushions or wall hangings out of the blocks if you didn't wnat to do the whole quilt. God bless and keep stitching :)

It's beautiful Rachel! I have one made by my grandmother and when my aunts were over they started to tell me from what outfits all the pieces were taken from (they didn't buy fabric then - and they wore non knit outfits!)

Hi Rachel, your quilt is fabulous, what a treasure for the future! I've just gone back and read your post on Leanne and Rosies workshop last year, and realised I was there the same day you were! Small world. lol
I had a wonderful day in Chch then, and only wish there were a few more opportunities for days like that. Have you started another big quilt project like this yet?
